Synapse Audio heeft Antidote gelanceerd, een Rack Extension voor Reason. Deze synthesizer ziet er op het oog misschien eenvoudig uit door de lekker compacte interface, maar vergis je niet: hij klinkt fantastisch.
Synapse Audio heeft zich de laatste tijd gestort op het maken van Rack Extensions, het plug-in formaat voor Reason. Dit softwarebedrijf is onder meer de maker van Dune, een uitstekende VST-synthesizer. Een tijdje geleden maakte Synapse Audio op fora al bekend met een synthesizer bezig te zijn die als RE zou worden uitgebracht. De speculaties waren toen natuurlijk dat het om een RE-versie van Dune zou gaan. Maar nu Antidote is gelanceerd bleek niets minder waar te zijn.
Antidote is een krachtige virtueel analoge synthesizer met twee oscillators die beiden ondersteund worden door een suboscillator. De suboscillators voorzien het geluid van wat meer bas. Antidote heeft een modulatiematrix aan boord en verschillende effecten. De effecten kunnen ook worden losgelaten op externe audio, door aan de achterkant van de synthesizer een virtuele kabel door te trekken.
Antidote is erg allround. Bassen, leads, pads, speciale effecten, het is allemaal mogelijk. Ook geeft Antidote verrassend goede synthetische drumgeluiden.
Een belangrijk nadeel van Antidote en de Rack Extensions plug-ins in het algemeen is het forse cpu-gebruik ten opzichte van de instrumenten die standaard in Reason zitten. Zo kun je een beperkt aantal synthesizers in je Reason rack kwijt, heel wat minder dan vergelijkbare VST-instrumenten in andere sequencers. Het is te hopen dat Propellerhead Software dit exorbitant hoge cpu-verbruik oplost.
Ondanks het hoge cpu-verbruik is dit wel een Rack Extension die je als Reason gebruiker moet hebben. In de onderstaande audiodemo’s wordt Antidote gebruikt:

Synapse Audio does a lot of effort creating Rack Extensions, the plug-in format for Reason. This software company is the creator of Dune, an excellent VST synthesizer. A while ago, Synapse Audio announced on forums that it was busy with a synthesizer for Reason. The speculations were that a RE-version of Dune was going on. But nothing was less true now Antidote is released.
Antidote is a powerful virtual analogue synthesizer with two oscillators that are both supported by a sub oscillator. The suboscillators provide a little more bass end. Antidote has a modulation matrix and various effects. The effects can also be used for manipulation of external audio, by pulling a virtual cable and plugging it in at the back of the synthesizer.
Antidote is a great allrounder. Basses, leads, pads, special effects, it’s all possible. With Antidote you can also create surprisingly good synthetic drum sounds.
A major drawback of Antidote, and Rack Extensions plug-ins in general, is the major cpu usage compared to the standard instruments in Reason. You can only use a limited number of synthesizers in your Reason rack, a lot less than similar VST instruments in other sequencers. Hopefully, Propellerhead Software will solve this exorbitantly high cpu usage in future.
