Novation heeft de laatste tijd zoveel midicontrollers uitgebracht dat je haast zou vergeten dat het Britse bedrijf ook synthesizers bouwt. Na tien jaar is er met de nieuwe UltraNova synthesizer eindelijk de opvolger van de SuperNova II.
In eerste instantie lijkt de UltraNova op een van Novations midicontrollers met Automap, de software uit eigen stal die virtuele knoppen op het computerscherm automatisch aanwijst aan die van de midicontroller. In het promotiefilmpje van UltraNova zie je zelfs op gegeven moment de knop Automap staan:
De UltraNova is een zogenaamde virtueel analoge synthesizer, wat wil zeggen dat hij is geïnspireerd op de ouderwetse analoge synthesizer. Het geluid wordt echter volledig digitaal geproduceerd. De synthesizer kun je bedienen vanaf het keyboard zelf of vanuit de software op de computer.
De synthesizer is op het oog eenvoudig te integreren met je sequencer op de computer. Je sluit hem aan via de usb-poort. Hij beschikt over veel in- en outputs en kan zelfs functioneren als een geluidskaart voor je computer. De specificaties en afbeeldingen van de UltraNova vind je op de website van Novation.
Een bijzondere feature van de UltraNova is de aanraakbediening van de 8 draaiknoppen. Zo kun je tijdens live-performances snel verschillende effecten oproepen, zoals de onderstaande video laat zien:
Als je toch al op zoek bent naar een midi-keyboard voor je computer dan is deze UltraNova misschien ook nog niet eens zo gek. Hij ligt over ongeveer zes weken in de winkel tegen de prijs van rond de € 650.
