De drukke markt voor VST-synthesizers weerhoudt de producenten er niet van om deze zomer met nieuwe plug-ins te komen. Xils-lab komt met Synthix, Cakewalk met Z3TA+2 en Geforce heeft net impOSCar 2 voor de Mac uitgebracht. Vandaag heeft discoDSP Corona gelanceerd. Deze zogenaamde virtueel analoge synthesizer is eenvoudig, maar effectief, net als het gelijknamige Mexicaanse biertje.
We zijn erg enthousiast over Corona. De synthesizer heeft een lekker grote, overzichtelijke interface waarin alle knoppen en opties (op de modulatiematrix na) op één scherm staan. De klanken zijn allround te noemen met pittige bassen, snerpende leads en warme pad-geluiden.
Corona beschikt over 3 oscillatoren, waarin je megaveel golfvormen kunt laden. Naast de klassieke golfvormen (sinus, zaagtand, driehoek, ruis, enzovoort) en de eigen factory-golfvormen levert discoDSP een paar honderd golfvormen mee van klassieke synthesizers als Moog, Roland, Korg en anderen. De golfvormen van de oscillatoren kun je op ruim twintig manieren met elkaar combineren, wat veel mogelijkheden oplevert voor geluidsontwerpers.
Verder beschikt Corona over onder andere een filter, filter-LFO, modulatie-LFO, en een paar effecten waaronder een unison, een chorus en een delay. Via de modulatiematrix kun je verschillende parameters koppelen voor een dynamischer geluid. Het enige dat ontbreekt is een arpeggiator, maar op zich is dat niet erg omdat de meeste sequencers al over een prima arpeggiator beschikken.
Corona kost € 95. Een demoversie is beschikbaar. Houd er tijdens het testen van de demoversie rekening mee dat deze geen automatisering ondersteunt. Automatisering is uiteraard wel mogelijk met de betaalde versie.

Today discoDSP launched Corona, a so called virtual analog synthesizer which is easy, but effective. Just like the Mexican beer with the same name.
We are very excited about Corona. The synthesizer has a nice big, clear interface with all the buttons and options (but the modulation matrix) on one screen. The sound is allround with punchy basses, biting leads and warm pads and strings.
Corona has 3 oscillators with loads of waveforms. Besides the classic waveforms (sine, sawtooth, triangle, noise, etc.) and the factory waveforms, it also includes a few hundred waveforms from classic synths such as Moog, Roland, Korg and others. Furthermore, you can combine the waveforms of the oscillators in more than twenty ways, which gives a lot of possibilities for creative sound design.
In addition, Corona includes a filter, filter LFO, modulation LFO, and a few effects, including a unison, chorus and a delay. The modulation matrix allows to link different parameters for a more dynamic sound. The only thing we didn’t find is an arpeggiator. But that’s not a big issue, because many sequencers already have a decent arpeggiator.
Corona costs € 95. A demo version is available. When testing the demo version, please note that the demo does not support automation. Of course, the paid version features automation.
