Apple heeft de specificaties van de nieuwe MacBook Pro’s bekend gemaakt. Naast de verwachte upgrades van de cpu en grafische chip is het grootste nieuws wellicht dat de laptops worden voorzien van Intels Thunderbolt I/O-technologie.
De MacBook Pro 13-inch is beschikbaar met de dualcore-versies van de Intel Core i5 en de Intel Core i7. De 15- en 17 inch modellen worden uitgerust met de Intel Core i7 quadcore processors. De grafische chip en de cpu zijn samengevoegd op één chip. De processors zijn standaard voorzien van Hyperthreading, waardoor het aantal cores virtueel wordt verdubbeld. Daarmee zijn de laptops volgens Apple tot twee keer zo snel als de voorgaande serie van de MacBook Pro.
Naast de bekende firewire 800 en usb-poorten is de MacBook Pro nu ook voorzien van een Thunderbolt I/O-poort. Deze Thunderbolt-poort biedt een data-overdrachtssnelheid van maar liefst 10 gigabit per seconde. Dat is twee keer zo snel als usb 3.0 en ruim 20 keer sneller dan usb 2.0.
Thunderbolt is niet alleen goed nieuws voor mensen die veel met video werken, maar zeker ook voor audiobewerking. Aan de kleine poort kunnen meerdere apparaten worden aangesloten en kan razendsnel data van de laptop naar een externe harde schijf of NAS worden gekopieerd. Ook kunnen audio-interfaces die zijn voorzien van Thunderbolt veel meer inputs en outputs aan, cool voor het opnemen van grote orkesten onderweg!
Volgens AppleInsider heeft Apple tot 2012 exclusief het recht gekregen om Thunderbolt uit te rollen. PC-gebruikers moeten geduld hebben tot de lente van 2012. Nu is het alleen wachten op apparaten die met Thunderbolt overweg kunnen…

The MacBook Pro 13-inch features the dualcore versions of the Intel Core i5 and i7. The Intel Core i7 quad-core processors are standard on the MacBook Pro 15 and 17-inch. The processor and graphics engine are on one chip for better performance. Hyper-Threading will be standard, which virtually doubles the amount of cores on the processors. According to Apple the performance of the new MacBook Pro will be up to two times faster than the previous versions of the notebook series.
The FireWire 800 and USB ports are there again, but the Thunderbolt I/O port steals the show. Thunderbolt offers up to 10 Gb/ second data transfer speeds. That’s two times faster than USB 3.0 and about 20 times than USB 2.0.
Thunderbolt is good news for both video and audio enthusiasts. The small port can chain up to 6 devices. Thunderbolt is ideal for fast data transfer from the laptop to an external hard disk or NAS. Mobile audio interfaces with Thunderbolt support can handle a lot of audio inputs and outputs, that’s nice for recording big orchestras on the road!
AppleInsiders says that Thunderbolt is exclusive for Apple computers until 2012. PC users have to wait until spring next year. Now we have to wait upon the first arrival of Thunderbolt devices…
