WaveMachine Labs has announced Auria, a digital audio workstation (DAW) for the iPad. Auria can handle up to 48 audio tracks and would be able to record up to 24 tracks simultaneously, not bad considering the hardware specifications of the tablet. MIDI is not supported. Interesting is that Wave Machine Labs approached some makers of VST effects for the effects section. Users can enhance the sound of their tracks with effects made by PSP Audio Ware and FabFilter. Auria is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2012 and will cost about $50.
Unfortunately, this will not be the great breakthrough of the VST plug-in on the iPad. It’s not possible to load external plug-ins because of the closed nature of apps. Every DAW for iOS can therefore only handle internal effects; external plug-ins are not possible. The iPad will therefore rather be used as an extension, not as a complete replacement for your desktop or laptop.
